Academies Bill drops key social inclusion duties
Barnet Labour councillors have called the Academies Bill that became law only a week ago "a blueprint for social exclusion" after the final Bill dropped several key education duties that relate to social inclusion and pupil wellbeing.
Labour's Childrens' Spokesperson, Cllr Anne Hutton said:
"The new Academies legislation is a bluprint for social exclusion. It creates a two-tiered education system where one set of rules applies to local authority schools but won't apply to Academies and where more resources are funnelled to Academies. This is all deeply socially divisive, and while the Con-Dem government insists that Academies will still have to abide by the same school admissions code, this is a backward step into the dark ages of social division."
